Raven’s Roost Overlook is one of the prettiest overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway for engagement photos near Charlottesville. It’s also probably hands down, bar none, the most popular overlook in the area for photo sessions of any and all kinds. As a result, I rarely shoot there. I always find it slightly awkward when there are 3-5 other photo sessions happening at the same time.
That being said, it is incredibly lovely and has probably the most stunning sunsets of any overlook in the area. So for the right couple, namely one that is pretty extroverted and doesn’t mind other people around, it’s a great pick for engagement photos.
A few pro tips: Raven’s Roost Overlook has limited parking and it is almost always full. So if possible, it’s best to carpool here.
I like to start at the iconic tree at this overlook and then walk down below the wall for sunset proper. Most photographers don’t go down below the wall so it’s a way to escape the crowds a bit. It is pretty rocky below the retaining wall, though, so good footwear is a must if doing this.
Nkasi and Mazi are planning a big Nigerian wedding, but wanted something more simple for their engagement photos. They both showed up in incredible style and I don’t think I have laughed so much during engagement photos in a long time.
Truly, if you want natural-looking engagement photos, I cannot emphasize how much of a difference just letting loose and enjoying yourself makes. We went from editorial to dancing to straight model status with these two. Interested in seeing an elopement here? Check out this Raven’s Roost Elopement.
