1. Stony Man is Popular—Plan for Crowds

Because of its breathtaking views and easy, 1.6-mile round-trip trail, this spot is one of Shenandoah’s busiest locations. If you want privacy, a weekday sunrise elopement is your best bet. Sunset can be gorgeous too, but expect more visitors—especially on weekends.

Stony Man sits at over 4,000 feet, so conditions can change quickly. It’s often super windy, which can make for dramatic, windswept photos but also means you should be prepared with layers (and a plan for your hair!). Fog can also completely white out the view, especially in the morning, but if you’re lucky, you might get a cloud inversion, where you’re above a sea of clouds—a true bucket-list experience.

3. There Are Three Summits to Explore

Most people head to the main summit, but Stony Man has two secondary overlooks that offer incredible views with fewer people. I always scout the best spots on the day of an elopement to find the most private, scenic location for your ceremony and portraits.

If you’re staying at Skyland, you’re in luck—the Stony Man trailhead is right there. That makes it easy to catch an epic sunset for photos after your reception or even do a quick pre-wedding sunrise hike for couples’ portraits.

If you want to invite a few close friends or family members, Stony Man is a great choice. Up to 15 people are allowed at the summit, making it one of Shenandoah’s best elopement spots for a small but meaningful ceremony.
