James Monroe’s Highland is a beautiful wedding venue close to downtown Charlottesville. The historic property was once the estate of President James Monroe.
The estate features incredible gardens, rolling hills, tree-line roads and white picket fences. It’s good fit for couples who want a historic manor feel for their wedding without paying the price of some other local venues.
Ceremonies typically take place in one of the gardens or at what they call the Blue Ridge Lawn. Receptions are held in the covered pavilion while cocktail hour is typically held in one of the gardens.
There are plenty of photo opportunities between the boxwood gardens, driveway and wildflower/vegetable garden.
The major downside of this venue is that the “getting ready” spaces are not very pretty. If you pick James Monroe’s Highland (more commonly just called “Highland”) as your wedding venue, I’d recommend getting ready at an airbnb or one of the local hotels instead.
Highland is probably one of the more affordable wedding venues in Charlottesville, but it gets excellent reviews.
Here’s one from Wedding Wire:
“This venue is one of the most beautiful wedding destinations in Charlottesville, and is easy to work with, while not breaking the bank! Emilia and the rest of the event staff at James Monroe’s Highland are very responsive, helpful, and professional. I am a wedding planner and coordinator based out of Richmond, and it is crucial to have a supportive venue when making plans for clients. If you want a historic venue with gorgeous views at a great price, look no further!”
I’ve worked here twice and both weddings were incredibly lovely.
