Blackrock Summit is one of the best spots for engagement photography sessions in Shenandoah National Park. It’s only about half a mile from the parking area and is beautiful at either sunrise or sunset.
The rocky summit features 360 degree views from the very top of the rocky overpass or you can walk down the Appalachian Trail a little bit and climb on top of some other rocks for west and north facing views.
It is a popular spot though for both photographers and park visitors so it can be really busy. Sometimes you get lucky and you get it to yourself on an evening — that’s what happened with Sophie and Ciao. But more often, to avoid other people, you either need to choose: sunrise or a weekday.
On beautifully clear days, the sun can still be really harsh an hour and a half or so before sunset. So we started their session by pulling into the trees a little bit and then slowly worked our way out.
Because Blackrock is so — rocky — it’s a spot I only recommend to people who feel like they have really good balance and are comfortable with some rock scrambles. Shoes with a rubber sole are also a must at this location. We want beautiful photos of you, but we also want you to be safe! So booties or work shoes with a solid rubber bottom are perfect choices. Some people also do hiking boots or sandals like Chacos.
As the sun starts to go down, the mountains come more into view. The sun sets behind you at this spot. Beautiful light flares leaked across the lens. On sunny days like Sophie and Ciao got, it’s a golden paradise.
So who is Blackrock Summit a good fit for? People who want stunning mountain views for their engagement session with a relatively easy short hike, but who don’t mind other visitors possibly being there too!
