If you’re looking for an adventurous yet easily accessible spot for your Shenandoah National Park engagement photos, Blackrock Summit is a perfect choice. With its unique rock formations, panoramic views, and golden light, this location provides a breathtaking backdrop for couples who love the outdoors.

What to Expect at Blackrock Summit

One of the best things about Blackrock Summit is that it’s an easy hike to the top. The trail is only about a mile round-trip with minimal elevation gain, making it accessible to nearly everyone. However, once at the summit, good balance is needed to navigate the rocky terrain. The massive boulder field creates an incredible, otherworldly setting, but you’ll want to wear sturdy shoes to move around safely.

Plenty of Space for Gorgeous Photos

Despite its popularity, Blackrock Summit offers several different spots for photos. Whether we’re capturing intimate moments among the rock formations or taking in the sweeping Blue Ridge Mountain views, we’ll have plenty of variety in your gallery. If there are other hikers around, we can easily shift to a different part of the summit for unobstructed shots.

Best Time to Visit: Sunrise vs. Sunset

This location is stunning at both sunrise and sunset. Mornings provide a peaceful, quiet atmosphere with soft, glowing light. Sunset, on the other hand, brings a rich golden hour glow but tends to be much busier with hikers. If you want to avoid crowds, a weekday morning session is best.

One thing to note: the light-colored rocks at Blackrock Summit reflect a significant amount of light. It stays incredibly bright until about 30 minutes before sunset, so we’ll take that into account when planning your session. The good news is that light lingers at the summit longer than at other locations, giving us extra time to capture those dreamy post-sunset tones.

A Great Spot for Two-Person Elopements

In addition to engagement sessions, Blackrock Summit is also an amazing location for a two-person elopement. The dramatic scenery makes for an unforgettable ceremony backdrop. However, because there are no large flat areas, it’s not a spot I recommend for groups or traditional wedding setups.
