Peaks of Otter is one of the prettiest places for engagement photos near Roanoke. Lauren and Mitch opted for Abbott Lake.
The Abbott Lake loop is a .9 mile mostly paved, flat trail. It can be accessed from the lodge. The trail features a boardwalk, paved path and mountain views. From the trail, you can see both Sharp Top and Flat Top Mountains.
Because of its proximity to Peaks of Otter Lodge, it’s a popular path. So we decided to meet at sunrise. Fall colors were just beginning to peak.
In October, the sun rises almost exactly between the two mountains. It was cold and frost still gripped the grass when we started. But these two didn’t seem to mind. We started by walking down the boardwalk toward Sharp Top. The lake was perfectly still and the mountains mirrored on its surface. The clouds began to turn pink and grey.
We talked about their upcoming wedding — scheduled to take place next year in Portland. For those getting married in Virginia, Peaks of Otter also hosts weddings. Or you can stay at the lodge and get married at nearby Sierra Vista instead.
